Is your child’s adjustment disorder related to divorce?

As most Texas parents would agree, children are typically resilient and adaptable by nature. However, when unexpected situations arise or life changes occur, children, just like adults, may show signs of adjustment disorder. It is helpful for a parent to understand what types of issues usually cause adjustment issues for kids, and it is also important to know where to seek support if a parent does not feel equipped to help a child resolve such issues alone.

Adjustment disorder is often related to these issues

No two children are exactly the same; however, many kids have gone through similar experiences and may be able to relate to each other regarding the processing of emotions during such times. The following list shows the most common issues that are often connected to children who are struggling to adjust to their circumstances:

  • relocating to a new home or town
  • attending a new school
  • divorce
  • a parent’s remarriage
  • health problems of child, a parent or sibling

The issues on this list often intersect, which is why a parent whose child is navigating one or more of these issues will want to closely monitor that child’s emotional, mental and physical health to watch for symptoms of adjustment disorder.

These symptoms may be cause for concern

If a Texas parent notices one or more of symptoms included in the following list, he or she may want to reach out for additional support for the child in question:

  • complaining of stomachache
  • crying when it is time to go to school
  • lack of appetite
  • insomnia
  • rebellious behavior in a normally obedient child
  • regression, such as an older child sucking a thumb

Divorce is not easy and can be especially challenging for children. It is not uncommon for parental conflict or legal problems to arise that cause children stress and may make adjusting to a new lifestyle difficult. The sooner a parent can resolve these types of problems, the better, which is why it is helpful to seek support from an experienced family law attorney as needed.
