Mass casualty collision in Texas

On Behalf of | Feb 18, 2021 | Car Accidents |

Any number of issues can impede a Texas driver’s ability to safely navigate roadways. Every driver is obligated to adhere to traffic laws and to use common sense in situations where there are obvious roadway hazards. There were winter storm warnings and travel safety alerts on a recent Thursday morning when a massive collision involving as many as 75 to 100 vehicles had disastrous results.

Early morning road conditions were icy that day

Police say there were sections of road that were icy at approximately 6 a.m. when the pileup occurred. Vehicle after vehicle slammed into one another, resulting in more victims with injuries than there were local rescue resources to provide support. Many people were reportedly trapped in their vehicles in the aftermath of the collision.

Additional support was requested from surrounding areas

At least 36 people were transported to various medical facilities. Sadly, five people suffered fatal injuries in the crash. As numerous fire departments, emergency responders and traffic investigation units combined efforts to help evacuate people, a nearby location was designated as a reunification center so that families of those involved could be reunited with their loved ones who were still at the scene.

Seeking financial recovery following a motor vehicle collision

Drivers in Texas and elsewhere must take precautions to reduce the risk of collision when inclement weather or poor road conditions create hazards. Serious collisions are often caused by driver negligence, particularly if a specific driver was distracted at the wheel or operating his or her vehicle under the influence of alcohol. In such cases, recovering victims may seek restitution by filing a personal injury claim in a civil court.
