5 ways to document a car accident scene

On Behalf of | May 26, 2022 | Car Accidents |

Most drivers in Texas understand that motor vehicle travel includes risk, but they also typically assume that, if they adhere to traffic laws and safety regulations, they’ll likely arrive safely to their destination. While being cautious and complying with traffic regulations helps reduce the chance of collision, one motorist cannot control the behavior of another. A driver’s momentary distraction or reckless decision can have disastrous results.

If a collision occurs, it is important for those involved, particularly someone who has suffered injury, to document the scene. Injuries may be life-threatening or so severe that a person is unconscious or unable to begin documentation of the events. However, someone else may be able to do so on his or her behalf. There are five things to do to begin creating a detailed file of the incident.

These 5 things are important to have in the aftermath of a collision

Getting people safely to the roadside (if possible) and securing the area, as well as seeking medical attention, are priorities after a collision. The following list shows several important steps to take to document the scene, which comes in handy later on, especially if a recovering victim files a personal injury claim in court:

  • The make, model and year of all vehicles involved in the collision
  • License plate numbers
  • Contact information (name, address, email) of other drivers involved
  • Name of other drivers’ insurance carriers and their policy numbers
  • Photographs of the scene, especially damage to vehicles or surrounding objects, as well as personal injuries

Thorough documentation of a car accident scene is important for many reasons. Obtaining swift medical attention also provides written documentation of the incident via medical records at the emergency room.

Pursuing financial recovery for losses following a collision

Texas law allows a recovering car accident victim to seek compensation for damages, which may include property damage, physical injuries and emotional pain and suffering. A plaintiff in a personal injury case has the task of providing evidence to convince the judge or jury that the defendant’s negligence caused the damages that occurred. This type of litigation is stressful, which is why most plaintiffs hire experienced injury law attorneys to act on their behalf in court.
